For the last few years, I thought the feeling among academics and environmentalists was that nuclear energy was the way to go. That it is cleaner and safer and cheaper than coal or natural gas or the other options. “The New Nuclear Craze” pokes holes in each of those positions and makes me wonder whether nuclear power might not be the answer to the world’s energy problems.
Remember Guantanamo Bay? Yes, it’s still there. There are still 166 prisoners. But there are also 20,000 books. I was interested to hear about Gitmo’s library, the prison’s censorship and the supposed “escape” it lends to the captives who’ve been there for years. Some of the books were donated by the relatives of people who died on 9/11.
“As many as 50,000 stray dogs roam the streets and vacant homes of bankrupt Detroit, replacing residents, menacing humans who remain and overwhelming the city’s ability to find them homes or peaceful deaths.” So goes the lede in a Bloomberg story about wild dogs in Motown. But beware, some Detroiters call the piece hyperbole.

NASA wants an asteroid because it provides a lot of research potential and, frankly, going to the moon is old news.
