The sun woke up and smiled a warm smile through my window.

I yawned out my yawns and tickled out my sleepies, and then I heard a voice I knew. “Good morning, my little bear of a bear cub,” said Mommy. “It’s time to start the day.”

I laughed a big little laugh and jigged a wide-awake jig. It was time to adventure.

“But wait,” said Mommy with a hush. “Where are your feet? We can’t start the day without them.”

I opened my eyes wide as the sky, but I couldn’t find any of my toes or the feet where they live. When I fell asleep the night before, I had them all. But now… where did they go?

“Let’s go searching for your feet, my little bear of a bear cub,” said Mommy. “They can’t have gone far.”

She leaned in close, eyes eyeing every inch.

“Are they on the top of your head?”

“No, they’re not here.”

“Are they at the tip of your nose?”

“No, they’re not here.”

“Are they behind your ear?”

“No, they’re not here.”

“Wherever could they be, my little bear of a bear cub?”

“Are they under your pillow?”

“No, they’re not here.”

“Are they wrapped up in your blanket?”

“No, they’re not here.”

“Are they peeking out over the edge of your bed?”

“No, they’re not here.”

“Wherever could they be, my little bear of a bear cub?”

“Are they tucked close to your tummy?”

“No, they’re not here.”

“Are they at the end of your arms?”

“No, they’re not here.”

“Are they high in the sky?”

“No, they’re not there either.”

“Wherever could they be, my little bear of a bear cub?”

Just when it seemed we might never find my precious feet again, a light came on in my mind. And I remembered where I’d left them.

I looked down and Mommy followed my eyes. And, sure as sunshine, there they were, at the ends of my legs, ten toes and all.

Mommy’s face lit up even brighter than the sun out my window. “There they are,” she said. “I knew we would find them, my little bear of a bear cub.”

And we did. And the day–and its next adventure–could begin to begin.
