Perhaps it is true that Freya never could have known what would happen when she put on the Peacock Cape.

But she put it on all the same.

And spun around.

And around.

The faster she spun, the higher she floated.

The higher she floated, the faster she spun.

Like a colorful rocket, she went out through the window

And up into the clouds.

“I’m flying,” Freya said. “I’m the Peacock Queen, Master of the Sky.”

And she was.

Freya didn’t mind the cold air high in the sky because the moon shone on her face and made every color glitter on the Peacock Cape. The light made her feel warm.

Freya said, “So this is what it feels like to be a star.”

Birds circled around Freya as she danced on top of a cloud. Birds of every size and shape and color. They all looked at Freya in her Peacock Cape, thinking her the most magnificent of them all.

“The Master of the Sky!” chirped the birds.

“The Peacock Queen!” squeaked the bats.

And all together they cooed, “You’ve come at last. We’ve waited for so long.”

“I’m here,” Freya said. “And I’m not going anywhere.”

All the birds squawked and clawed and sang their praise. The stars sent a lovely glow down on Freya. The dragons bowed their massive heads. The clouds formed a stupendous soft throne.

The night went on and on, and the moon moved across the sky, and all the heavens and their creatures showered Freya with praise. “The Peacock Queen! The Peacock Queen! The Peacock Queen!”

But as the night gave way to morning, and the first light of day began to peak over the horizon, Freya began to feel drowsy.

She wrapped the Peacock Cape around her, warm and snug, and bid the birds and the stars, “Good morning.” And she fell asleep.

When she awoke, she found she was back in her room, tucked in her bed.

She looked to the window and saw the day had come. There was a bird singing outside her window, looking right at her.

“Mother, where is my Peacock Cape?” Freya called.

Before Mother could answer, the many colors caught her eye from the hook on her door.

Freya got out of bed and smiled. She already couldn’t wait to wear the Peacock Cape again tonight.

This time, she knew exactly what would happen. She looked at the bird in her window.

And smiled.
